The Secretary-General of the UNs World Tourism Organization Taleb Rifai highlighted Iran’s great tourism potential.

Addressing a press briefing hosted by the Berlin-based Foreign Press Association (VAP) on the sidelines of Berlins 48th ITB tourism fair, Rifai stressed Iran is a very active member within the World Tourism Organization.

Iran has shown a desire to open up within the last few years and our organization is ready to further deepen our cooperation with Iran, he said.

According to IRNA, Rifai pointed also out it had become easier to visit Iran over the past six months.

He highlighted the fact that Iran attaches great importance to promoting its tourism industry as one of the Iranian vice-presidents is also in charge of tourism affairs.

Rifai noted tourism could only blossom when there is a clear political will.

The UN tourist official hailed Iran for using tourism as a soft diplomacy tool, saying there was a direct link between promoting peace, stability and soft diplomacy.

People to people contacts are the biggest destroyers of barriers and stereotypes, said Rifai who has been Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization since 2010.
